100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima

Aug 21 Around the Diocese

In view of the significance and relevance of the Fatima message, Bishop Thomas Olmsted is launching a diocesan wide Centenary Fatima celebration. He has invited everyone in our Diocese to join him in the next six months to explore and implement the teaching of Our Lady of Fatima. We will use this time for evangelization, prayer and penance; and in a particular way, to call people to family prayer. Our intentions will be:

  • The end of abortion and all violence against the innocent
  • An increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life; and
  • The strengthening of vocations to married life

This celebration will consist mainly of promoting a 54-day novena dedicated to praying the Rosary and doing penance. The 54-day Novena will kick off with Solemn Vespers on the eve of the Feast of the Queenship of Mary on Mon, Aug 21 at SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral, and will conclude with Solemn Holy Mass on Fri, Oct 13 at the Cathedral in which Bishop Olmsted will consecrate our entire Diocese to the protection of Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In commemorating the Centenary Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima, Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity until Sun, Nov 26. There are three ways to obtain the plenary indulgence: make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, pray before a statue of Our Lady of Fatima in Church or chapel, and for the elderly and sick that cannot move, pray before the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in their own homes.

Conditions of plenary indulgence: Must be in good standing with the church Perform the work for which the indulgence is granted Be free of venial sins (thus going to confession is a must).
