The Birth of the Church and COVID-19

05-31-2020Weekly ReflectionRev. Victor C. Yakubu

Today is the birthday of the Church. It is a birthday because the Church was established on this day in 33 AD. As Peter, the leader of the apostles, preached on this day, over three thousand people were baptized and added to the number of believers. On this day also, the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and gave them power and authority to preach in the name of Jesus.

There are many other reasons to count this day as the birthday of the Church. On this day, the fire of the Holy Spirit renewed the hearts of the apostles, believing strongly in the promises of Jesus. He did not make vain promises to them. Rather, he made candid promises that he fulfilled. Apart from the descent of the Holy Spirit, he promised to be with the Church until "the end of days."

We have come to regard this as Pentecost Day because of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Without the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church will be vulnerable to the actions of the devil. But with the presence of the Church, no matter the temptations or the attacks, the Church will come out strong and triumphant.

There are many lessons we can learn from the history of the Church. Over the centuries, the Church witnessed attacks from within and from without. From within the Church, heretics rose to destroy the dogmas and tenets of the Church as taught by Jesus. From without the Church, many non-Christians attempted to destroy both the Church and its people using persecution and martyrdom. Both attacks from within and from without are vain but dangerous attempts to subvert the intention of Jesus Christ who wishes that every individual should be saved.

Unfortunately, overzealous impostors claim to know more than the Magisterium of the Church, misinterpreting what Jesus said and what the Church believes. This has given rise to divisions within the Body of Christ. These divisions can be seen today in the different names of Churches with different dogmas claiming to represent the mandate of Jesus. Although it is hard to condemn anyone, it is proper to state that obedience to God's eternal Word is paramount for any believing assembly. We can put our divisions aside and work toward evangelistic gains in the world. The devil is working overtime winning souls using persuasive teachings. Instead of working on our divisions, it is necessary to dwell on how we can work collectively to win souls from Satanism, atheism, and covert evil.

The present coronavirus pandemic, aka COVID-19, in my opinion, is a test of faith. It can suppress the faith of individuals and make them vulnerable to contrary teachings. If not, why do we pay much attention to COVID-19 without considering the dangers of other terminal ailments like cancer, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, etc. that claims thousands of lives year in and year out. Why do we not proclaim a lockdown during the flu season and disallow people from roaming the street? It never happens. But COVID-19 has won the day with all kinds of rules and regulations.

We need answers to our many questions at this time of COVID-19. Do not get my opinion wrong. We need not take things for granted and underplay the potency of the virus. We need to be safe and ensure our loved ones are also safe. Above all, we need to petition the heavens as Peter did so that God can send us the Holy Spirit to teach us all that we need to know about COVID-19. Pentecost Day is God's answer to the fear of the unknown. We too, need answers to our questions both known and unknown about the COVID-19. We believe that Pentecost brought about a renewal in the Church of the apostles and therefore, we wish the same renewal now.

Both the first and the second readings of today encourage us never to be afraid. At the times of the prophets, God revealed his saving plan for Israel despite the enemies seeking its destruction. In our time, the enemies have transformed into different disguises with powerful positions of authority. But our God has not changed – for he knows the plans and machinations of the enemy. He will offer a solution that unlocks the obstacles of the gospel. He shall renew our weak hearts with his Holy Spirit and refresh our Church with new energies to surge ahead in the coming years and coming centuries.

The message on Pentecost Day, therefore, is about divine empowerment. God's ways will surely overcome the ways of the devil no matter the disguise and the duration. At the end of the day, Jesus will win the battle. The Holy Spirit will come like Pentecost. It will remove what does not belong to God and restore our lost time, lost income, and plans for tomorrow. Based on God's eternal promise of salvation, we should never give up under the stress of COVID-19 or any disguise of the enemy. Rather, we should arise and proclaim a new beginning with new promises of prosperity. We need to be bold like Peter to speak truth until the crowds convert. Despite COVID-19 and the confusion it has brought to our families, we nonetheless wish the Church happy birthday, today and forever. Keep praying!

No me malinterpreten mi opinión.

¡Sigue sonriendo!
